What are Chapped Lips?

Having chapped lips is a common condition in which lips become dry and cracked. While caring for other body parts, we generally forget to give proper nourishment to lips. It is the most visible part of your face when you converse with others. If you really want to look attractive and beautiful, you will have pay proper attention to lips. Chapped lips can become clinical condition also if ignored for long. Your smile can be painful if you have chapped lips. 

Chapped lips crack, split, and bleed. You can see roughness, dryness, peeling, flaking and sensitivity in lips. This condition creates redness of lips and severe pain, which is chronic. But when lips touch food or moisture, this pain can alleviate. Chapped lips mar the glow of your otherwise pretty face. Applying lipstick makes it worse to even look at.  Lips tend to dry fast and more vulnerable to the atmospheric conditions than any other area of the face. Lips do not have any oil glands as other parts of the face have.  It means that you have to regularly apply moisture to lips and have to prevent this drying away. It seals the moisture against harsh weather.

Lips are constantly exposed to dry and cold air, sunshine, heat and being the most delicate, react to these situations more than other areas of body. Chapped lips in summertime can be avoided by using a lip balm, which contains sunscreen. Chapped lips become a common sight during winters, dry weather, and arid climate. People generally lick the lips to wet them but this contrarily worsens the situation. Like summertime lip balms, in winters too use of emollient lip balms is best. There are many emollients available containing lanolin, cocoa butter, shea butter and Vaseline.

You cannot expect problem of chapped lips to go away in day. It has to be treated regularly and missing it even for a day, will bring you back to painful condition. Your daily body care routine should include lip care also. Take time out buy some lip care products to keep your lips smooth and glossy. As the saying goes “ An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Causes for Chapped lips

- Excessive exposure to harsh atmospheric conditions like sun, dry, cold wind
- Use of lipsticks which are allergic
- Constant licking or wetting of lips with no moisturizing balm
- Eating poor diet, which lacks in vitamin B, essential fatty acids, water and other nutrients.
- Excessive smoking can also brings chapping of lips.
- Undesirable use of soaps and chemicals
- Due to any skin disorder

Symptoms showing chapped lips

 You can identify chapped lips from following symptoms
- Redness on lips and around lips
- Dry flakes of skin
- Mild pain and irritation on and around lips
- Bleeding from cracks of lips

How to treat chapped lips:

- Use of essential oils containing skin moisturizer, vitamin E, get like aloe Vera is shows quick results in treating chapped lips as these products keep the lips oily.
- One should apply lip balm or petroleum jelly at least twice a day, in the morning and in the night before going to the bed.
- For this you should apply and massage the lip balm gently on the lips and after that wipe it with a damp soft cloth. It will takes out the dead skin cells from lips and increase the blood circulation.
- Never forget to apply lip balm containing a sun block before going out.
- Keep yourself hydrated by drinking large quantity of water, at least 10-12 glasses.
- You can also put a lipstick in daytime having lip moisturizer in it.
- If chapped lips has become an clinical condition, put a medicated balm
- Also it is important to take proper diet, which has required amount of vitamin B2. The cracked corners of the mouth indicate deficiency of riboflavin.

Prevention of Chapped Lips

- Avoid to expose your lips to harsh atmospheric conditions like dry, cold winds, excessive sunshine
- If you have to go out, apply an effective lip emollient having sun block
- Daily care of lips by applying petroleum jelly twice is essential.
