Dandruff is such a mysterious ailment of scalp that no body has escaped its attack at least once in life. Dandruff is a skin disorder of scalp, which is itchy and annoying. Dandruff can occur at any age, even in children.

Dandruff and its causes


In normal conditions, normal flaking of skin cells occurs in the process of skin growth. If you have dandruff condition, Skin of scalp sheds dead cells at excessive rate.  It can get triggered due to any irritation or skin allergy.  There may be internal and external cause of dandruff. Internal causes may include hormonal imbalances, lack of hygiene, poor health. It may be due to lack of proper rest or any emotional stress.  Some people also get dandruff due to excessive consumption of sugar, fat and starch. Nutritional deficiency can cause dandruff. Deficiencies of vitamins, like B-complex or omega 3 fatty acids, can also cause dandruff condition on scalp.  External factors like cold and dry weather conditions, excessive use of hair gels and sprays, hot hair curler, curling irons may cause dandruff. Other external reasons include using hair-coloring products in improper way, not washing hair regularly or inadequate rinsing of hair with clean water. Excessive use of chemical products makes the scalp rough, dry and it starts flaking. Dandruff may be hereditary disposition also.

How to Get Rid of dandruff?

You can get rid of dandruff by getting a proper treatment of dandruff, which includes treating both internal and external factors causing dandruff. Though dandruff cannot be cured completely but dandruff can be prevented from increasing.  Treatment for dandruff can be divided into many categories.

Treating the dandruff externally:
You can wash your hair with anti-dandruff or anti-fungal shampoo. Before shampoo, massage with oil which helps prevent flaking of scalp.  Avoid excessive use of any chemicals like hair gels, sprays and coloring agents on hair. Regular cleaning of hair is the most important for controlling dandruff.

Taking proper diet:  Eat a balanced diet, which includes all the vitamins and nutrients, needed for skin. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables keeps the dandruff away. Drinking a plenty of water keeps the scalp skin hydrated and prevents it from drying. Another important thing is to sleep for 7-8 hours at night, which gives proper rest. People suffering with dandruff should avoid excessive intake of sugar, fat, salt and alcohol. All of these methods are must to support   any treatment for curing dandruff. 

Reducing Stress:
Stress can be reduced by having yoga and meditation routine. Reducing stress can control the skin flaking.

Consult a physician:
You can consult a skin specialist if you cannot control dandruff by any of the treatment by yourself. He may prescribe you some oral medicines to treat your dandruff.

Home Remedies for treating Dandruff:
You can treat dandruff by applying various natural products. There are many home remedies to treat dandruff. Here are few effective home remedies, which are easy to prepare, and simple to apply.

- Curd treatment:  Prepare a mixture of juice of half lemon and curd. Quantity of this mixture should be enough to apply at scalp and full length of your hair. Apply this mixture to your scalp and hair and keep it applied for about 30 minutes. After this wash hair with a mild shampoo. Do this treatment frequently whenever you have dandruff and afterwards you can reduce its frequency as dandruff gets reduced. Texture of your hair will improve by application of curd.
- Take poppy seeds and ground them with some milk. Apply this mixture and after some time, wash your hair with water and shikakai, an herb.
- Grind fenugreek seeds and take 2tsp of its flour. Soak it overnight and in the morning apply this paste to your scalp for ˝ an hour. Wash it with warm water. This is a wonderful recipe to reduce dandruff and hair loss too.
- Take 3 parts of olive oil and mix to it one part of honey. Apply this mixture to your scalp and wrap it with a hot wet towel to give steam treatment to your hair.  Then wash it with mild shampoo. It is a good cure for dandruff.

Little Preventions to avoid dandruff

Avoid excessive exposure of your hair to sunrays as it dries the scalp and damages hair texture. Also protect your hair from too cold weather conditions. Follow proper hygiene routine. Take proper balanced and nutritious diet. Stay away from any stress condition.
