Hair Color: Change as you like
Natural Hair color is produced by the pigment cells present in hair follicles. Color is the result of chemicals of eumelanin and pheomelanin. The intensity of hair color depends upon the amount of melanin present in the hairs. If you have more melanin, you have darker hair. On the other hand if you have less melanin, you have lighter hairs. Hair color may change with time and you may have different shades at one time. Different people carry different hair colors even in same ethnicity. Hair color varies from pale yellow to deep black. Out of two pigment chemicals, eumelanin gives black color and pheomelanin gives red color. Pheomelanin is present in all human hairs. It is the amount of eumelanin, which decides, how dark will be the hair color.
Natural hair color may be black, brown, blonde, red or gray. Black is the most common color of human hair. Then brown is the second most common color of human hair. Blonde and red are the rare colors of human hair. Hair colors also have genetic association like skin tone and eye color. Some disorders like skin cancer and albinism can result in blonde or red hair color.
Conditions affecting Hair colors:
Aging: Gray hair color is part of aging. It is natural to have gray hairs with growing old. There may be some instances of premature graying due vitamin deficiency or excessive stress. It is caused due to decreased activity of pigment cells in hair follicles.
Albinism: There is an absence of pigments in human hair, skin and eyes in this genetic abnormality. Hair color is white or pale blonde in this condition.
Vitiligo: It is autoimmune disease and causes loss of hair color in patches.
Malnutrition: Not taking proper nutrition is a cause of decrease in activity of pigment cells of hairs. Malnutrition lightens the hair color. If you take proper nutrition, you can get back the natural color of your hair.

Temporary Hair Color: This color is temporary and stays until next shampoo wash. It is applied in the form of a rinse during shampoo.
Semi Permanent Hair Color: This type of hair color has the ability to darken the hair color or can change the tone of the color on your hair. It cannot lighten the color as it is just painting color on hair. It can be completely removed after several washings of hairs.
Permanent Hair Color: If you apply permanent hair color, your natural hair pigment is removed and never comes back. This is the case when you get your hairs highlighted or lightened in which bleach is used.
Tips for Hair coloring:
- If you have color on your hair, use a special shampoo for color-treated hair.
- Fine hairs get hair color faster than the coarse hairs and also get darker tones quickly.
- You should prevent your colored hairs from fading and drying in sunrays by using scarves, hats, sunscreens etc.
- If you are going for swimming with colored hairs, protect them from chlorinated water by wearing a bathing cap.
- Coarse texture of gray hairs makes it difficult to color hairs. So it is best to choose a semi permanent hair color, with a shade lighter than your natural hair color.
