Facts about permanent hair removal
It is difficult to locate a method of permanent hair removal. Permanent hair removal does not mean removal of hair forever. It just means long-term removal of hair. Permanent hair removal means that you do not have to use other methods of hair removing at least for one year after the final hair removing treatment. Permanent hair removal cannot be done at home. It needs the services of skilled and expert practitioners. Besides that, latest devices are also used to carry the treatment. Each type of permanent hair removal has its own set of advantages and limitations.
Electrolysis:
Out of many methods, electrolysis is the only clinically proven method to remove hair permanently. It is a century old method of hair removal. But to remove the hair permanently using electrolysis, one has to undergo many treatments at salon. Another important consideration is the electrologist. You should choose electrologist carefully after checking his success rate. He should be well trained and experienced. This technique can be safely used to remove hair from many parts of body such as eyebrows, cheeks, lower and upper lip, underarms, breasts, bikini line, legs, stomach, toes etc.
In this method, a small needle is inserted into the hair follicle. Then an electric current is passed through the needle. This in turn, affects the hair follicle. This destroys the root of the hair and hence its capability to produce and grow new hair. There are two techniques used for electrolysis – galvanic and thermolytic. Hair follicles are destroyed chemically in galvanic electrolysis. Hair follicles are destroyed using heat in thermolytic electrolysis.
Electrolysis treats each hair individually. It needs several sessions to remove the hair completely. It also depends upon person to person and texture of hair. Each session can take 15 minutes to one hour.
Electrolysis is a good technique but it has some disadvantages also. It is expensive and time consuming also. There may be some side effects also like dry skin, inflammation and scarring. Make sure that the instrument used is well sterilized before use.
Laser Hair Removal
This is another method of hair removal. This does not remove hair permanently but it is for long term. In this technique, laser energy is converted into heat energy. The laser light targets the skin pigment, melanin. As follicle stores the melanin, follicle gets destroyed. Eventually hair growth is arrested. Only area to be treated is affected and leaves the surrounding skin unchanged. This process works on the simple phenomenon that dark objects absorb light.
It has its limitations like it works best for the people who have light skin and dark hair. It cannot be used for gray, red or blonde hair. If used on dark skin, laser cannot differentiate between dark skin and hair and in the process surrounding skin also gets damaged.
Advantages: It is a very safe method. It can treat large areas within short time. Unwanted hair is removed without damaging skin pores. It is faster when compared to electrolysis.
Intense Pulse Light therapy
In this method, high intensity pulse is directed on the skin. It is the latest technique. People of any age can use this technique to remove hairs. A soothing gel is applied on the area to be treated and is covered with a prism. Now an intense pulse of light is directed through prism, which lets the selected rays to be directed on the desired area. This beam targets melanin in the hair follicle. The heat produced in it, burns the hair follicle and shaft. Before proceeding with treatment, practitioner tests for capability of skin to undergo this treatment. It produces long-lasting results of hair removal. It can treat large areas at once within short time.
