Hair Removal: Different Methods

Hair removal is possible, using many methods. People want to remove unwanted hair and hair removal is prevalent for many centuries in all-human cultures. Women are, especially, concerned about hairless and smooth skin. The technique of hair removal may vary according to the regions and technology developed. While choosing method of hair removal many factors are taken into account like which area of body to be treated for hair, amount of hairs to be treated, texture of hairs, type of skin, skin color, cost involved, safety, effectiveness and ease of use of technique.

There are some methods of hair removal such as shaving, bleaching, using chemical depilatories, tweezing, waxing, plucking, which you can do yourself at home. While other methods of hair removal such as electrolysis, laser hair removal, waxing of some parts, should better, be done at salons by professionals.

Hair Removal Methods to remove hair from the skin Surface:
Methods like shaving, bleaching and using depilatories remove the hair from the skin surface.

Shaving for Removing Hair:
Shaving is the most common method used, both by men and women, for hair removal. It is the best way for men to maintain their moustaches and beards. It just cuts the hair from the top of skin. Shaving should be done after applying some moisturizer like, shaving cream, body wash or water to the skin as it helps the razor to glide over the skin.

Bleaching:
Bleaching is not actually a method of hair removal; it just lightens the hair color to make it unnoticeable. This done by applying a bleach cream over desired area and removed after 10-15 minutes.

Depilatories

In this method, chemical solutions like gel, cream, lotions, aerosol etc. are used which work like a chemical razor. The main ingredient is normally, calcium thioglycolate, which is a highly alkaline chemical. Protein structure of the hair gets dissolved with application of this chemical and hair gets separate. You should check these products for any allergic reaction to your skin, before using them.  A depilatory is applied on the skin for 3 to 15 minutes. It results in jelly-like substance, which is wiped or washed.

Hair Removal Methods to physically remove the hair:
Methods like waxing, tweezing and threading remove hair physically from the follicle.  Removing the hair repeatedly, using these methods, damage the follicle and reduce the frequency of hair to grow back.

Waxing: This method is used to remove hair from large areas at one time. Waxing is heated and applied on skin in the direction of hair growth. While wax cools, it grips the hairs firmly and then wax is pulled off with a sudden jerk in the opposite direction of growth. It removes the hair out of follicle. Do not overheat the wax. You can use sugar waxing also in which thick, hot sugary substance is applied on the skin and is then pulled off suddenly with the help of a strip in opposite direction of growth. It works in the way as the traditional waxing. Sugar being water soluble, it is easy to clean from skin.

Plucking and Tweezing:
It is the easy and the most inexpensive way to remove hair. But it is time consuming and is used only to remove stray hairs on eyebrow or face.

Hair Removal Methods To Remove Hair Permanently

Electrolysis: Electrolysis is very safe technique to remove hair permanently. A skilled electrologist should do it. In this method, a fine needle is inserted into the hair follicle. Then electrical current is applied to the root of follicle. It destroys the hair follicle by burning it and prevents it from producing new hair. This method treats each hair individually. Hair to be treated should be in anagen phase. It does not cause much pain. The only side effect is that it can cause some reddening of skin sometimes. It takes several sittings to remove hair permanently. Hair from any part of body can be successfully removed from this technique.

Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal technique uses a laser light to treat the hair. This laser targets the hair pigment, melanin. This in turn destroys follicle, which stores the melanin. This technique is not for everyone. It is best used for the people with light skin and dark hair. It cannot be used at gray, red and blonde hairs. This treatment is repeated, to get the hair removed completely. It reduces the growth of hair. It is the fastest method to remove hair from large areas like back, legs, hands etc.
