Homemade Astringent : Easy to prepare

Astringents are generally referred as toners for skin care. Astringents are excellent for removing oil from skin and tightening it. A good astringent improves the circulation of blood in tissues of skin. Besides controlling oil from sebaceous glands and tightening the skin, astringent also helps to lower the PH level of skin after cleansing. Another benefit of astringent is that it removes all the traces of leftover makeup and opens up all the pores, clogged by grease and grim. This step is essential before applying moisturizer.

Before choosing an astringent, determine the type of your skin. There are different kinds of astringent according to skin type. Astringent should be such that it works according to your skin requirements and improves overall appearance of skin. It can be used to calm and soothe the irritated skin, repairs the rugged skin, removing of oil helps to prevent blackheads and other blemishes. Tightening of skin prevent early signs of wrinkles, sagging of skin tissue.

Astringent should be used after washing of skin and before moisturizing. First wash your face with a gentle cleanser. Avoid using harsh cleansers like soap. Use soft towel to dry your face. Then dip a cotton ball in the astringent and apply it on the skin in gentle strokes, especially on t-zone and cheeks. Then apply moisturizer. Do this process twice in a day.

There are many astringent products available in the market. But you can use natural products to easily make homemade astringent. These homemade astringents have advantages like they are inexpensive and also have no chemicals in them. Most of the homemade astringent has natural ingredients like witch hazel, green tea, calendula, nettle, and sage oil, avocado oil as their base. Some astringents have alcohol as their base but it is too drying on skin.

Some of the most effective homemade astringents:

Rosemary Astringent

Take two tbsp of rosemary powder, 2 tbsp of lemon peel and 1 tbsp of orange peel, 30 mint leaves, ½ tsp sodium benzoate, 1 cup rosewater and ¼ tsp brandy. Boil mint leaves, lemon and orange peels in rose water for ½ hour. Mix all the ingredients to make a smooth lotion and refrigerate it after cooling.

Chamomile Astringent

Take one cup of milk and dried chamomile. Soak chamomile in milk for a day and strain it. Add to it 8 tsp of wheat germ and 4 tbsp of honey. Blend it to make a lotion and keep it in airtight jar.

Lemon astringent

Take 4 tsp of lemon juice, 8 tsp of witch hazel, ½ tsp of peppermint extract and 2 tsp of alcohol. Mix all the ingredients well. Keep it in an airtight jar after straining. This is an effective astringent for oily skin.

Cucumber and lemon juice Astringent


These are the effective natural astringents. Grate cucumber and squeeze to have juice and mix it with lemon juice. Apply on the face with help of a cotton ball.

Cucumber Astringent

Take a cucumber, peel, grate and squeeze out its juice. Add to it 3 tbsp. Rosewater, 1 tbsp of glycerin and 2 tbsp of eau-de-cologne. Refrigerate for long use.

Sandalwood astringent lotion


Take 8 tbsp of sandalwood oil. Mix it well with 2 tbsp of almond oil, 1 tbsp of honey, 4 tbsp of rosewater, 4 tbsp of orange flower extract and 5 gm of sodium bicarbonate. Store it in an airtight jar and refrigerate for preserving.

Lemon Orange Astringent

Take thin slices of ½ lemon and ½ orange. Add to it ¾ cup ethanol alcohol. Blend all of these in a blender till a paste. Strain it and store in an airtight jar. It is a very effective astringent, which refreshes the skin, removes oil and tightens the pores. You can keep it for 6 months.

Lemon Astringent


Mix 3tsp of lemon extract, juice of one lime and ½ cup alcohol.  Store in a jar and shake well before use.

 Protein Toner

Take one egg, 1 tbsp milk and tsp honey. Beat them well and apply on face and neck. Apply it for ½ an hour. Wash it off with warm water followed by a splash of cold water.

Some simple tips for astringent effects

- Make a paste of small peach, ½ tsp tomato juice and ½ tsp of limejuice. Apply this for astringent effect.
- You can wash your face with a mixture of vinegar and water.
- Take juice of two large lemons, 1 tbsp tincture and 16 tbsp of distilled water. Apply it with cotton wool.
- Rub cut tomato on your face and wash it after half an hour.
