Rosewater is main ingredient of many cosmetics you use in daily life. It has a very sweet smell and mild astringent qualities. It is used as toner for dry skin. Rose water is used for various purposes. Rose water is made from the most revered flower of the world that is rose. For this purpose many-petaled, fragrant and damask roses are used. Roses are revered from ancient times for its beauty, charm, medicinal powers and aromatic oils. Rosewater and rose oil is used in almost all the countries including western countries.

Pure rose water is made from distilled water of roses. Roses have delicious taste and ambrosial smell.  Rose water also has anti-bacterial and antiseptic qualities. Due to these properties of rosewater, in ancient times, Roman used to bath in rosewater. In India, people put drops of pure and chilled rosewater into eyes to relax them from tiredness. Rosewater is added to many sweet delights. It has unique flavor. You can prepare rosewater at home either by simple method or by complex distillation method.

Recipe 1: Simplest Method to Prepare Rosewater

Take a sun tea jar and pour in it, rose petals and water. Then keep it in sun for many days. Rose water prepared from such homemade recipes cannot be used for long as it is prone to bacterial growth. You should use it as fresh as possible.

Recipe 2: How to Prepare Homemade Rose Water

To prepare homemade Rose Water, you will need some special utensils like a pressure cooker with screen, a stainless steel container, 2-5 feet long plastic hose and dark colored glass bottle.

Method: Place the rose petals on the screen placed over water in pressure cooker. Place hose instead of valve. Boil water for few minutes and pour cold water over the hose. Now rose water is ready to be collected in stainless steel container. Transfer the oil to glass bottles.

Recipe 3: Home made Rose Water


Take one cup of Rose Petals, 2 cups of water, a glass bowl with lid. Glass bowl should be heat resistant. Water should be filtered or distilled. Take cheesecloth and also a glass jar with lid.

Take freshly picked rose petals. Wash them thoroughly to remove any chemical on them. Quantity of rose petals should be fully packed one cup. Separately boil two cups of water and pour over the rose petals in the glass bowl. After this cover the glass bowl with lid and let rose petals steep for 30 minutes. Then remove it from fire and allow it to cool. Strain this water from a cheesecloth or fine strainer. Throw away the rose petals and collect the pure rose water in a glass jar with lid.

This rose water can be used only up to 10 days. To use it up to one month, pour one tbsp of vodka to it as preservative.

Recipe 4: Homemade Rose Water

Take an enameled Pot, rose petals and distilled water


Method: Pour rose petals at the bottom of enamel pot up to few inches. Then cover the rose petals with distilled water. Water should be just enough to cover the rose petals. Now place this over fire to heat the water to steaming hot but do not boil it. Heat it over low flame until rose petals lose their color into the water. You will see that rose oil is skimming over the surface of water. This process should take around 60 minutes. Let it cool after that and strain it from a fine strainer and collect your pure rose water.
 
Some important notes to remember


- You should make it a point to pick fresh rose petals. It should have no chemicals on it.
- You should pick rose petals 2-3 hours after sunrise when morning dews have evaporated.
- Use only petals without stems and leaves.
- Rose petals should be washed thoroughly to remove any dirt, bugs etc.
- As far as possible, use organic roses.

How to use Homemade Rose water


- Store this rosewater in a glass bottle with a spray. Keep it in fridge to keep it chilled.
- Mix homemade rosewater and glycerin in a glass bottle and use as a toning moisturizer.
- Using rose water can restore PH balance of skin. It is beneficial for all skin types.
- You can prepare a room freshener by mixing 3 parts of rosewater and 20 drops of essential oil like rose, lemon or Lavender.
