How to Apply Moisturizers
Moisturizers are the basic and the most important skin make up. Moisturizer is the most important substance required for the skin care. No matter what is the type of your skin, you will need moisturizer to maintain its texture. Moisturizers provide moisture to the skin. Moisturizers are prepared from some formulations containing oil and water.
Types of Moisturizers:
There are different kinds of moisturizers for different kinds of skin. Some moisturizers are oil-free and are recommended for oily skin. While other moisturizers have components, required to care for dry skin. Moisturizers are the chemical mixtures, which make the topmost layer of skin smoother, supple and prevent skin moisture from escaping.
The most popular and the most effective moisturizer is the petroleum jelly, Vaseline. It creates a coating above the skin which do not let the moisture escape out. Moisturizing creams are also available which have more oil then water. These are thick in consistency and very effective for very dry skin. Moisturizer softens and hydrates the skin without clogging its pores.
Moisturizers are regarded as cosmetic and therapeutic as well. Moisturizers are provided with soothing and pleasing fragrances. Moisturizing lotion is emulsion of oil, water and emulsifying agent. Cream emulsion comes in the form of solid moisturizer. Water in oil emulsion comes packaged in a tube and is called ointment moisturizer. It contains 80% oil and 20% water. These are better for extremely dry skin.
Moisturisers, which are water based and are less greasy, are less effective for dry skin. These are the mild moisturizers, which are required for normal to slightly dry skin. There are oil-free moisturizers, which are called humectants, which do not contain oil at all.
How to choose a moisturizer
To choose a good moisturizer, you should check that, it has nice smell and after its application, you do not feel your skin greasy. You should not have irritating or burning sensation on your skin after application of moisturizer. In more humid conditions, skin can moist itself and you need a lotion for moisturizing. Otherwise when humidity falls below 60%, you need moisturizers which greater moisturizing capability. Moisturizers containing glycerin, mineral oil, linoleic acid, ceramides or petrolatum are good for more humid conditions.
Moisturizer should be applied each time you cleanse your face and tone it. It helps to keep skin youthful and healthy. It may also help prevent premature aging of your skin.
Right method to apply moisturizer
Moisturizer should be applied with proper method to optimize its benefit. These are very simple tips but if you follow these, you will see the difference yourself.
- First of all wash your face and hands properly.
- Take moisturizer in your palms and spread it. Now apply it over the face and neck.
- Blend it thoroughly making upwards-circular motions.
- All skin types need to apply moisturizers. However people with dry skin should apply it more than once in a day and people with oily skin should apply only once a day.
- Best time to apply the moisturizer is just after washing of skin, when it is damp. This is because when you apply moisturizer to damp skin, it locks the water in upper layers of the skin and prevents it from evaporation. Leave the toner damp on skin and immediately apply moisturizer. Never apply the moisturizer on dry face and also do not apply it on wet face.
- You should use moisturizer with SPF protection during the daytime. Also at the same time do not use the same moisturizer with SPF protection, at the nighttime as it may clog your pores for long term.
- Avoid using moisturizer around the eye area because moisturizing lotion or cream is heavy for the skin around eyes, which is different from the rest of the face. Skin near eyes can become fluffy by retaining fluid. A separate eye cream should be used for that purpose.
- Do not forget to apply the moisturizer on neck. Apply it in the upward strokes.
- If you are going to apply foundation just after applying moisturizer, let the moisturizer dry for 5-10 minutes otherwise your foundation can become streaky.
