How to Choose Makeup Brush

Type of hair on Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes are made up of natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Brushes prepared from natural fibers have hairs of squirrel and goat. These are high quality brushes with rubber or wooden handles. These are used for fine quality, small brushes with silky texture. Natural bristled makeup brushes are right for applying powder blush, face powder, lipstick and eyeshadow. For applying oil based makeup, cream eyeshadow, concealers. Brushes should be rounded with silk texture.

Powder Brushes

For applying powder and blush, brush should have round edges and flat. You can use these brushes to press on areas where shine is required. Avoid using large and thick brushes as you cannot use them at places where you want to apply powder. When you are selecting brush, make sure that it has right angle and right pressure handle, which are very important for right application of makeup.

Eyeshadow brushes

After the powder brushes come the eyeshadow brushes. Eyeshadow application needs precision and skill. Without correct type of brush, you won’t be able to give desired look. You will need two types eyeshadow brushes for eyeshadow, one for smoky eyes effect and other for applying multitude eye shadows. For smoky eyes, you will need a small, angles brush for concentrated eyeshadow application around rim of the eyes. Other brush will smoothly apply eyeshadow all over the eyelid.

Eyebrow Brush

It should be made up of nylon firm bristles. Firm bristles of this brush help combing eyebrows effectively and separating the hair to give right eyebrow shape. Short eyebrow hair can be groomed very precisely. Another thing about this brush is that it should be angled enough to apply small amount of eyeshadow on the brow hair.

Eyeliner Brush

For applying cream or powder eyeliner, you will need fine tipped round brush.

Lip Brush

Lip brush should be small, narrow and flat. It should have straight end and fine bristles. Synthetic lip brush are better than the natural brush as they give better control and pressure to apply lipstick effectively. These kinds of lip brushes add extra shining touch to the lipstick and also provide smooth finish to the dark colored lipstick.

Highlighter Brush

Highlighter brushes are used to apply highlighter under the eyes and it should be slightly bigger than the eyeshadow brush. Choose for the dense and rounded tip brushes for this purpose.

Concealer Brushes

For applying concealer, brush should be flat headed. There should be firm tip of the concealer brush to let them reach the hard darker spots of the skin. Concealer is used with cream. Keep one thing in mind; do not take excessive concealer cream. Concealer brushes are sometimes made up of sponge tip instead of hair.

Maintenance and Cleaning of makeup brushes

As brushes carry oil, makeup and dirt on them. It will lead to buildup of bacteria on brushes. Cleaning of brushes is very important as dirty brushes can transfer bacteria to your skin. After use, wash the brushes in running warm water. Apply a mild shampoo over the bristles; it will clean away the grease on the brush hairs. Do not rub the shaft of brushes; do it gently. Put the wet brushes on soft towel and let them be air-dried. Do not use heat or warm air to dry the brushes; it will damage its bristles. For lipstick brushes, use an oil removing solution. Use different brushes for light and dark makeup. Change brushes at least once a year. Throw away worn out brushes. Avoid sharing of make up brushes as it may cause infections.
