Caring for Greasy Skin

Appearance of greasy skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. Greasy skin is prone to many skin problems like acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. Greasy skin looks fine in the morning after you have washed it and looks greasy and sticky till noon. You have to take more cleansing of this type of skin.

Skin has natural waterproof barrier to protect skin in the form of sebum. Sometimes this production of oil is more than required. Occurrence of greasy skin is more common in teenagers. Skin becomes greasy when it has more active oil producing glands. During the puberty age, sebaceous glands produce more oil. Greasy skin can be the result of your heredity. Women during their pregnancy also face changes in the hormones and can result in more active oil producing glands. This grease catches more dust and dirt and clogs the skin pores and result in formation of blackheads.

Greasy skin can be recognized easily by its shiny looks. Its texture is thick and coarse. Greasy skin has visible large pores. Formation of acne is very common problem for greasy skin. There is one positive aspect also attached to the greasy skin is that they show signs of aging slightly later than dry skin. Though, you cannot cure this greasy nature of skin but you can do lot to control its effects.

Greasy Skin care: Cleansing: Most important care of greasy skin is to keep it clean so that its pores are unclogged. You should use a non-oily and non-creamy cleanser to clean the skin. You can use mild soaps and warm water to wash the skin. But there is word of caution too, do not over wash your skin as over drying can stimulate the oil-producing glands to produce more sebum and it will worsen the condition. You can prepare a cleanser for greasy skin by mixing a tsp of skimmed milk, a pinch of turmeric powder and enough water to make milky solution. Apply it with cotton ball on the face. While going to bed at night, do not forget to clean your face properly. Remove all the makeup with the help of makeup remover.

Toning: A toner should be used after cleansing to remove any left over traces of oil and cleanser from the skin. It will help tighten skin pores and it will reduce the catching of dirt.  Applying a tea tree oil based toner is very effective for greasy skin. It has antibacterial properties also which help kill the bacteria causing acne on the skin.

Moisturizing a greasy skin is not that important but you should apply some oil-absorbing and non-oily moisturizers over the skin to keep it hydrated.

Exfoliating: Exfoliation of greasy skin makes it fresh and smooth. Exfoliation removes dead cells from the skin and keeps the pores clean. If you have acne problem, do not apply manual exfoliating agents, which scrub the skin harshly. Use chemical exfoliaters like AHA or BHA, which are fruit acids. These chemicals first help loosen the dead skin cells and then dissolve them.

Applying Masks: You can apply facemasks to absorb the extra oil on the skin. They also feed the skin with minerals and nutrients. Using a clay mask once a week will help absorb extra grease from the pores. You will see the results in few weeks of use. You can treat it at home with simple recipe but applied regularly. Take one tbsp yogurt, one tbsp tomato juice, one tbsp multani mitti, one tsp of honey and a pinch of camphor. Mix them all to make a facemask. You can prepare yeast mask also by mixing one tsp of yeast, one tsp of skimmed milk powder and water to make it paste. Yeast can be obtained from the grinding yeast tablets. Before applying this mask over face, clean it with water containing few drop of apple cider vinegar. Apply it on the face and after it gets dry, wash it with first with warm water and then with cold water. Use this mask once a week.

Eating a balanced Diet: If you have greasy skin, you should take protein rich diet but avoid taking excess of sugar and salt. Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables in your food. You should avoid taking deep fried foods. To maintain oil balance of your skin, take vitamin B supplements. Drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body.
