Oily Skin: Care Tips
Oily skin looks soft and supple but it is not smooth. Oily skin sometimes looks dull and greasy because of excess oil on the skin. Oily skin has more active sebaceous glands (Oil producing glands). Oily skin is prone to pimples, acne and blackheads. Oily skin has enlarged pores which ooze out oil over the skin surface.
Causes of Oily Skin: Skin gets oily mainly because of hormonal activity in the puberty. It is more common appearance in teenagers. Oil producing glands become more active in adolescence. There is hormonal shift in pregnancy, menopause also which can cause oily skin. Other causes of oily skin are wrong care of skin, using wrong cosmetic products and the humid and hot weather conditions.
Oily Skin care: Despite many disadvantages of oily skin, there is an advantage also that it matures later than other skin types. Appearance of wrinkles is slow for oily skin. You can maintain the healthy look of oily skin by taking proper care.
Cleansing: Cleaning of oily skin is very essential. Oily skin has oil over it, which catches the dust particles very quickly. These dust particles clog the skin pores. To avoid accumulation of dust particles over the skin, you need to wash your face with soap and lot of water. At the same time, take care not to use a very harsh cleansing agents which strip the off its oil. Washing more than twice is also not recommended. Both of these actions cause a condition called sebborrhoea, in which oil producing glands become overactive to compensate the lost natural oil.
To cleanse the oily skin, you should use the cleansing products, which dissolve the sebum. Avoid using products, which dehydrate the skin. While cleansing, use your fingertips to massage your face in circular, upward and outward motion. Avoid soaps with fragrances as they can irritate the oily skin.
Toning: After cleansing, application of toner or astringent is advisable. Toner refreshes the skin and dissolves any left over cleanser or oil over the skin. Do not use alcohol-based toners as they have drying effect over the skin. Toner also shrinks the skin pores which gives skin a smooth look.
Moisturizing: Oily skin does not need much of moisturizing. Still it will be benefited by the application of oil-free moisturizer. If you are below the age of 30 years and have oily skin, you need not apply a creamy moisturizer. After 30 years of age, apply a light nourishing moisturizer at night.
Exfoliating: Oily skin needs to be exfoliated at least once a week to remove the dead cells from the surface of skin, otherwise they will clog the skin pores which lead to many skin problems.
Food for Oily Skin: You should select your food carefully if you have oily skin. Your diet should include plenty of green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and proteins. Your diet should include essential vitamins and minerals needed by the skin. Deficiency in vitamin B2 cause oily skin. Eat whole grains, beans, nuts, wheat germ and nutritional yeast for vitamins B. Whole rice and black beans also help rejuvenate the skin. Drinking at least 8-10 glasses of water is must to flush out toxins out of body and keep the skin hydrated.
Avoid taking excess of sugar and salt. Reduce amount of fat in your food. Do not take deep fried foods heat processed vegetable fats. Avoid taking soft drinks, chocolates, junk food and alcoholic beverages.
Some tips for Oily Skin:
- Before taking bath, apply a mix of cucumber juice and limejuice for half an hour.
- If your makeup becomes patchy due to excessive oil at some parts, apply cucumber juice at oily parts and let it dry. Then apply makeup.
- Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water and pat this mixture over your skin. It will help control oil over the skin.
- Oily skin is benefited by the application of a clay mask, which absorbs the excess oil from the skin. Take 1 tbsp of green clay mud and 1 tsp honey. Apply this mixture on your face and neck, avoiding eye skin. After 15 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water.
- Do not smoke as it enlarges the skin pores and negatively affects overall health of the skin.
- Remove makeup before sleeping at night to clean up the clogged pores. It helps in rejuvenating activity of the skin while you sleep.
- Always make sure to use oil free moisturizers, foundation, cleanser and other makeup.
