Skin Types: Characteristics

For taking proper care of skin, you should know the skin type. It will help you in selection of right skin care products and cosmetics. Skin is a very delicate organ and needs pampering to stay in health. If you apply products randomly, it won’t do any good to the skin; instead make worse for the skin. Skin type is determined by the amount of oil produced by face. Skin is made up of network of small triangles and diamond shapes and has hair follicles and sebaceous gland pores.  If you magnify the skin, you can see small sweat dots, sebum layer.
Though, skin type is hereditary but it can and it changes with age.

Different skin Types:

There are five different types of skin, which is classified according to its oil activity and texture. Skin can be classified into following types:

Normal Skin
Oily Skin
Dry Skin
Combination Skin
Sensitive Skin

Normal Skin

Normal skin is even textured, soft and supple.  This skin has optimum oil activity of its oil producing glands. It is neither too oily nor too dry. It remains moist if taken care properly.  It has small to medium pores, so it looks smooth in appearance. Due to normal oil production on skin, it does not develop acne or blemishes. Normal skin is a boon and it tells about the good health of the person. Normal skin has glowing appearance.

Oily Skin:

Oily skin looks shiny and thick. There is over secretion of sebum on oily skin and this makes the skin surface oily. Oily skin has large pores on it.  This grease attracts the dirt and dust of the atmosphere and it gets stuck to skin. This dirt, oil in combination with dead cells close the skin pores. This condition makes oily skin prone to blackheads, pimples and acne. Oily skin is full of skin blemishes. Adolescents and young adult usually have oily skin due to more active hormones. Oily skin is well moisturized and it reacts less to external factors.  Oily skin needs to be thoroughly to treat these skin conditions. Oily skin has an advantage too, as it is less prone to wrinkles and signs of aging prematurely.

Dry skin

Dry skin looks dull and flaky. Sebum production of oil producing glands on dry skin is less than required. Sebum provides moisture-protecting film over skin. Dry skin lacks capability to retain moisture. This lack of moisture gives dry skin a parched look. Dry skin feels taut on washing. Dry skin is prone to wrinkles and scales. This type of skin is prone to premature aging. It needs constant moisturizing and particularly in winter conditions when air is drier and strips the skin off moisture. It needs good nourishing cream at night.

Combination skin

Combination skin is the most common type of skin. People with combination skin have combination of dry areas and oily areas on the face. This type is oily and dry at the same time. Certain areas are oily and others are dry. The T-zone, which is referred to chin, nose and forehead portion of face, is generally oily on a combination skin and other areas around mouth, cheeks and around eyes are dry. For a face with combination skin, tricky care is required. Dry areas should be treated like dry skin and central zone is treated like oily skin. There are skin care products available in the market specially designed for combination skin.

Sensitive skin

Any skin type can be sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is such a skin, which reacts abnormally to certain environmental changes and certain products like detergents, chemicals, perfumes etc. This type of skin develops redness, blotches and itch. This type of skin is generally thin and dry. Sensitive skin should be cared properly.  To protect sensitive skin to react severely, person should take some precautions like determining the reaction causing product and condition. Try to avoid contact with that particular object. Keep the skin moisturized, take proper nourishment to make your skin stronger.
