Winter Skincare
Winter is a beautiful season welcomed by all for the charms it brings. With all its beauty, winter also brings many skin woes too. Skin becomes dry, patchy, and rough. You can see flakes on the skin, chapped lips and feel itching. Cold and dry winds of winters are very stressful for the skin. You can handle all these skin problems of winter with winter skin care. A little skin care can keep away skin problems.
Why do we need winter skin care?
Due to low temperatures out side, there is less blood circulation in our body. As a result, skin is not able to absorb nutrients and proper oxygen. Skin renewal process gets slackened; skin looses its healthy glow and it becomes dull and pale.
Due to indoor heating system, skin becomes dry and flaky. And when you switch between cold outside temperatures and warm indoors, it becomes stressful for the skin. Skin is unable to balance between two temperatures. Skin becomes dehydrated, irritated and has widened capillaries.
To make your skin healthy and glowing during winters, you should make efforts towards restoring the protective hydrolipid barrier which help protect and balance your skin. The most important routine is to moisturize and moisturize. Also protect your skin against UV-light.
Use mild cleanser for gentle cleaning skin without having drying effect. Do not use soaps, shower gels etc as they make skin drier because of their alkaline nature. You can prepare mild cleansers at home by making a paste of oatmeal flour and milk. For dry skin, add to this paste some drops of sesame or aloe vera oil and almond meal. Take care not to scrub the skin and dry skin by patting with soft towel.
For keeping skin moist and hydrated, you should drink plenty of water. Besides external moist, skin cells of inner skin layers need to be hydrated to stay healthy and plump. Another function of water is to nourish skin cells by transporting nutrients. While drinking water in winters, care should be taken that it should be at room temperature or slightly warm. Include water rich green leafy vegetables in your food. Avoid dehydrating drinks like caffeine and alcohol.
Avoid hot and long baths in winters. Hot water has drying effect on skin. It makes skin drier. So limit your bath for short time and use lukewarm water for bathing. You can put few drops of vegetable oil in your bath to make skin softer.
Apply moisturizer just after taking a bath, within three minutes of taking bath, to let the skin absorb the moisturizer as skin pores are open at this time and it helps in trapping moisturizer. You can apply virgin vegetable oils to moisturize your skin. People with oily skin can also apply rich moisturizers in winters. Take special care of knees, elbows and feet as they become drier in winters.
You can improve blood circulation in winters by eating warm food, drinking warm water, herbal tea and exercising daily. It keeps skin clear and healthy.
Avoid excessive use of heaters and blowers as they strip off moisture from skin. Keep heat at lowest level. Make use of room humidifiers to balance the moisture in air.
Winter skin care for hands, legs and lips:
Skin of feet and hands get drier, it cracks and peels. After washing hands, apply moisturizer; wear gloves while doing washing dishes in kitchen or doing laundry and cleaning. Before going to bed at night, apply a massage oil to keep skin lubricated and relaxed. For cracked heals, soak your feet in warm water for ten minutes and wipe it with towel, then apply shea butter. After that, wear socks.
Apply sunscreen lotion while going out to protect your skin from harmful sunrays. You can apply a moisturizer having sunscreen in it.
Apply lip balm to prevent chapping of lips. You can apply good petroleum jelly on lips. Butter is also an effective remedy for chapped lips in winters.
Exfoliate your skin at least once a week to remove dead cells from skin. Go for gentle scrubbing; avoid harsh scrubbing of skin.
