Puffy eyes:

Puffy eyes mean swollen eye. Skin around eyes is thinnest compared to skin of any other part of body. For this reason, it is very delicate. This area of skin is filled with blood vessels. It makes it a highly sensitive region of face. It also have tendency to dry out as there are very few oil producing glands in this region. Muscles in upper and lower eyelids and the fat pads around eyes, hold the skin in place.  This condition of swelling of eyes occurs due to many factors. Eyes can be puffy due to trapping of fluid in eye tissue or accumulation of fat can cause permanent puffiness.
 Having puffy eyes is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom for some other eye disorder. Also, it is a cosmetic problem. It needs through examination by eye specialist. Condition of puffy eyes can be cured by some treatments taken at home and in consultation with eye care professional. There may be severe and persistent cases of eyes being puffy. There may be pain, blurry vision, and discomfort in eyes. Another important point is having puffy eyes is different from having eye bags. Puffy eyes are a temporary condition that anyone can get but eye bags are due to collection fat and can be cured by surgery only.

Causes of Puffy Eyes

There are several different causes of puffy eyes. Eyes can become puffy due to allergies, fluid retention, stress, hormone changes and many more factors. A very simple cause is crying. When we cry, eyes become puffy. This is because on response to emotions, there is larger flow of blood through eyes. Sometimes, when we wake up in the morning, we get puffy eyes. It may happen because of excess of sodium in diet, not having adequate sleep, drinking too much alcohol. Puffy eye condition may be due to some kind of allergy, dermatitis or sinus.

Some common factors leading to puffy eye condition may be:

·    Not having adequate or sound sleep.
·    Crying excessively
·    Having puffy eyes may be due hereditary factors.
·    Body’s fluid balance may get change due to weather conditions, travelling or hormonal changes. It creates puffy eyes.
·    Lack of adequate water intake.
·    High blood pressure causes fluids to settle around eyes and result in puffy eyes.
·    General or emotional stress. Production of excess of emotional tears results in puffiness in eyes.
·    Accumulation of wastes and toxins in the body.
·    Irritation caused by contact lenses in some cases.


Symptoms of Puffy Eyes

Following are the symptoms of puffy eyes.

·    Swelling in Eyelids which is puffiness
·    Redness in eyes
·    Itching in and around eyes
·    Sometimes, there is inability in opening and closing eyes


Treating Puffy Eyes:

Though there is no sure cure for this condition but puffy eyes can be treated by some home remedies and other treatments. It is not always easy to remove swelling caused but it is rather easy to prevent this condition to occur by taking simple routine steps.  Degree of effectiveness of these treatments is different for each individual is different. If condition is severe, doctor should be consulted so that he can rule out any serious condition like thyroid disorder, kidney problem, side effect of any medication taken or any other reason of swelling.

·    Drink lots of water to wash out toxins from your system and also to trigger water flow which help remove fluid, accumulated around eyes.
·    Use ice cold water to wash your face.
·    Limit intake of sodium.
·    Wet two tea bags and chill them in refrigerator. Keep them on both eyes for cooling effect.
·    You can also place two slices of chilled cucumber on eyes to soothe them.
·    There are several cosmetic creams available to relax puffy eye condition. These creams may contain vitamin and aloe extract.
·    If the condition is due to some allergy, then take medicine prescribed by doctor and avoid the substance causing allergy.
·    Take proper sleep at regular time.
·    Always sleep with your head elevated higher than rest of body. It will ensure proper circulation of body fluid and prevent it to collect around eyes.
·    Include deep breathing and jumping jack exercise in your daily exercise regimen to keep away puffy eyes. It helps develop lymph flow.
·    Puffiness caused in eyes due to age factor, can be removed by a simple and small operation.
