Foundation: choosing the right shade of foundation is hard on your own, so go to a cosmetics counter and seek professional advice. They will let you try out a range of colours and advise on which suits your skin tone best. One thing to bear in mind is that if you have only light freckles, there is no point in trying to cover them up with a darker shade - it will not work! It is better to stick to a sheer foundation. If they are very dark and you want to cover them up a little, a cream.

How to Apply Foundation

To apply foundation, start from the centre of the face, dotting on to the cheeks and forehead and blending outwards, first making sure your fingertips or make-up sponges are spotlessly clean. Gently blot the skin with a tissue to remove any excess product or surface oil. Never drag the skin if you are using your fingertips to apply cosmetics.

Smooth foundation over the lips and eyelids to act as a base for lip and eye products. If you’re not very good at blending foundation, try applying it with a make-up sponge. After smoothing on, moisten the fingertips and then work over the neckline to remove any signs of haphazard application.

Don’t apply foundation all over your face but only on those areas that need to be covered, such as around your eyes and nose and on your chin.

Try using tinted moisturizers if your complexion is dewy, and you’re really looking out for a light, sheer wash to even out the blotchiness.

For long-lasting foundation, apply a base of foundation and then moisturizer. If you don’t do this, your dry skin will soak up the foundation; and if you have oily skin, go in for an oil-free moisturizer and powder foundation.

For those who use powder foundation or a cream to powder formula, sponges are the best tools to use for application. You can choose either a dry or moist sponge. Be sure to work with one area at a time when applying the foundation. Using your sponge, start at the center of your face and blend outwards towards your cheeks, chin and forehead. The color of the foundation should “disappear” into your skin and not look like it is sitting right on top of it.

Types of Foundations

Tinted Moisturizers - These are a a cross between a moisturizer and a foundation, as they will soothe your skin while giving a little coverage. They are ideal for young or clear skins. Unlike other foundations, you can blend tinted moisturizers on with your fingertips.

Liquid Foundations -
These suit all but the driest skins. If you have oily skin, look for an oil-free liquid foundation to cover affected areas without aggravating them.

Cream Foundations - These are thick , rich and moisturizing, making them ideal for dry or mature skins. They have a fairy heavy texture, so blend them well into your skin with a damp cosmetic sponge.

No matter what method you choose, make sure to blend well around the hairline, jaw line, the under eye area, behind your ears (if you are wearing an up-do), and over your eyelids, which acts as a great base for eye makeup.

To cover imperfections apply foundation first and then go back and dot on a concealer that neutralizes red. For noticeable imperfections like very dark circles and birthmarks use a yellow concealer. Don’t use too much powder in problem areas because it will draw attention to it.

To avoid a foundation line around the jaw apply foundation as usual then use a little moisturizer in your hand and blend it down your neck.

For evening mix some shimmer powder with your powder and put it where you want to attract light such as the bridge of the nose, underneath the brow bone, the temples, cheekbone, chin and shoulders.
