Oily Skin Care Tips

Oily skin feels relaxed and supple, but looks shiny and is much more prone to outbreaks of spots. This is because of a heightened production of sebum (oil) by the sebaceous (oil producing) glands - too much sebum can cause a blockage in the duct, leading to inflammation and pimples. Sebaceous glands are unevenly distributed, being more concentrated around the scalp, on the forehead, along the nose and on the chin, and scarcer on the cheeks and neck, and around the eyes. As a result, most skins tend to be oily only in patches.

Tips for Oily Skin

Oily skin requires the opposite approach - instead of putting an emphasis on nourishing, you should focus on removing excess oil from it, hydrating, cleaning enlarged pores, and preventing or treating acne. Wash your skin about 2-3 times a day, but use a mild soap only once a day, because otherwise oil glands will be stimulated to produce even more sebum. Use only non-greasy moisturisers and tone your face often with alcohol-free herbal tonics or ice cubes, which will restore the health and balance of your skin. The best masks for oily skin are those featuring drying and hydrating ingredients, for example, clay, papaya, or yogurt. Apply once a week and make sure to rinse your face thoroughly with cool water after about 20 minutes.

Homemade Facial Mask for Oily Skin

Mix 2 teaspoons of Fuller’s earth with 2 teaspoons of chilled rose-water tomake a thick paste. Apply on your face with a brush, avoiding the delicate areas around the eyes. Leave it on for about 20 minutes or till completely dry. Rinse with warm water. The result is a clear pinkish youthful skin - all the excess grease and dead cells have been cleared away. The treatment should be used for oily skins once a week but if your skin is really very oily then you can apply it even twice a week.

Oily skin care has to be gentle, yet strong enough to reduce the oils that cause the problems. Treatment should begin with cleanse, cleanse, cleanse. It is one of the best solutions to dealing with oily skin. Two to three times a day should be enough, use a product that offers antibacterial properties but is gentle and “light” enough not to harm your skin, or leave a heavy residue. Water-based products work best! A moisturizer for oily skin should also be water-based and used sparingly. After cleansing, use an oil-free cream that controls shine and dissolves oils that form on the skin. Your aim is to keep skin under control, not too dry, not too oily, a matter of balance. Use of a bi-weekly mask has also been found helpful in stabilizing your “skin balance”

Natural Beauty Product Suggestions for Oilier Skin

Oil free moisturizers usually contain glycerin and water, and some of the best products also contain tea extracts and oatmeal. Oatmeal has long been recognized as a soothing skin care product, and when used as a mask can brighten your skin without drying it out too much. Companies like Aveeno are making oatmeal based moisturizers and makeup that work wonderfully to care for the skin. Beauty tips columns always contain the oatmeal facial mask as a remedy for oily skin. Just puree oatmeal with a little water, wipe on the skin, allow to dry most but not all they way, and rinse off.

Aside from doing all the right things, it is essential that you aren’t doing anything to make matters worse. For example, if you are using a moisturizer, even an oil-free moisturizer, stop immediately. Your oil glands are already working overtime and this oil is your own built-in moisturizer. There is no reason to add more. If your oily skin is still driving you nuts, my favorite trick is to use Milk of Magnesia and apply an extremely thin layer of it over the most oily areas. Let it dry, and then apply your foundation over top. When it comes to powdering, try loose powder instead of pressed powder. Even when pressed powder is oil-free, the wax-like ingredients that keep it in a pressed form can add to a slick feeling on the face. As a last resort, speak to your dermatologist about medical options for taming oily skin, which can range from birth control pills to hormone blockers and, in extreme cases, Accutane.
