Lisbon Hotels and City Guide : Attractions
Visitors to Lisbon often remark on the instant attractiveness of Portugal’s first city. Built on the terraced sides of low, steep hills overlooking the harbour, the combination of wide, tree-lined avenues, large public gardens and handsome squares demonstrates a thoughtful desire to provide a relaxed and informal setting with an easygoing pace for business and pleasure.
Torre de Belém (Belém Tower)
One of the city’s most famous sights is more impressive on the outside than it is on the inside. This white stone tower (built in the early 16th century to defend the river) was the last thing that the seafaring adventurers saw before setting off on their epic adventures.
Tower of Belem
The famous Tower of Belem is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of Lisbon’s most photographed landmarks because of the decoration on its exterior. The outer walls are adorned with a stone-carved rope and beautiful openwork balconies, along with Moorish watchtowers and battlements shaped like shields.
